Lou and Lutza Smith
An award recognizing exceptional service to families
The Smith Award for Excellence in Service to Families is  a $15,000 cash award made every two years. It was established through a grant made to the New Hampshire Children’s Trust Fund in 1996, from the Lou and Lutza Smith Foundation.

In making the Award, the review committee seeks to recognize and reward a community-based nonprofit organization or public agency that:
  • exemplifies a philosophy of service that recognizes the inherent value of skillful parenting and healthy families in shaping a child’s future
  • demonstrates a management capacity to operate family support services in a challenging environment
  • provides a program delivery system of exceptional quality
  • offers leadership in the community

A legacy of support for children and families
Lou and Lutza Smith were philanthropists with a special interest in children and families. Throughout their lives, the Smiths contributed generously to many local, regional, and national charities supporting the welfare of children and families.

Upon their death, a portion of their estate helped to establish the Lou and Lutza Smith Charitable Foundation, with the goal of continuing their legacy of support.

In 1996, the Smith Foundation awarded $500,000 to the New Hampshire Children’s Trust Fund, enabling the Fund to complete an endowment fundraising campaign, which included matching funds from the State of New Hampshire. In making the award, the Trustees of the Smith Foundation recognized the work of the Children’s Trust Fund in successfully creating public-private partnership to prevent child abuse and neglect, and promote healthy families.

Part of this gift from the Smith Foundation endows the Lou and Lutza Smith Award for Excellence in Service to Families.
