How to Report a
Suspected Case of Child Abuse or Neglect

Reporting suspected child abuse and child neglect to those who can take positive action to prevent further abuse or neglect is essential.

Your responsibility.
It is the responsibility of any adult New Hampshire citizen to take this step when there is suspicion that a child is being abused or neglected.

According to New Hampshire state law RSA 169-C, the Child Protection Act, any person who has reason to suspect that a child under the age of 18 has been abused or neglected must make a report to the Division of Children, Youth and Families.

If you have reasons to suspect that a child has been or is being abused or neglected, as a responsible adult you must contact the Division for Children, Youth, and Families Central Intake at: 800-894-5533 or 603-271-6556 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 pm.  In an emergency situation, or after intake hours, please call 911 for immediate assistance.

We know how difficult it can be to make a report of suspected child abuse or neglect.  You may be unsure of your suspicion or worried about repercussions from your report for yourself, the child, or the family.  It is important to remember that it is your responsibility as an adult to make a report of any concern or suspicion that you may have.  It is the responsibility of DCYF to determine if child maltreatment has occurred, and what action is necessary.
