Parents were honored at the Unsung Hero Award Ceremony at the NH State House on Wednesday, February 13th. The awards were presented by Governor John H. Lynch who also issued a proclamation designating February as Parent Recognition Month, in partnership with the New Hampshire Children's Trust Fund. He cited the important role that parents are doing to strengthening families and leading communities, making them safer and stronger for children and helping to prevent child abuse and neglect.
This February was the first annual Parent Recognition Month, when 29 parents, one for each day of February, were honored for the exceptional jobs they are doing as parents every hour of every day.
Nominations for these 'unsung hero' awards came from all over the state and from other parents, teachers and community members. The nomination forms include words like remarkable, inspiring, passionate, the glue that keeps her family together, an angel on earth, an advocate for all children and families, not just her own.
The group selected to receive awards included three grand parents raising their children's children, single parents, dual parent families, three dads, parents of special needs children, including autistic children, foster parents, adoptive parents, working full time, going back to school, Head Start parents, getting U.S. citizenship, and one with a spouse serving a second deployment in Iraq
